What’s Up Downtown – September 2015

9/02/15
‘In Focus: Downtown Architecture’ brings 25 images captured by local photographers Ryan Reason and Jennifer Burkart to the Las Vegas City Hall Chamber Gallery Sept. 17 to Nov. 19. The exhibit features historic, unique and important downtown buildings, from St. Joan of Arc Parish, the city’s oldest Catholic church, to the twisting, metal facade of the Frank Gehry-designed Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. The two photographers took nine months to complete the once-in-a-lifetime project.
Ryan Reason states proudly, “This series of images will show everyone around the world how wonderful Las Vegas is to the people who adore it as much as we do.”
In April 2014, the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs issued a call for photographers to create a series of photographs of architecturally significant buildings in downtown Las Vegas, which would culminate in both a gallery show and become part of Las Vegas City Hall’s permanent collection. Of the dozens of applicants for the assignment, Reason and Burkart—co-owners of commercial photography Studio, Square Shooting—were selected.
Shooting commenced in September 2014 after a series of meetings with the city. Burkart and Reason spent nine months on the project, often shooting buildings early in the morning before the sun rose for optimal lighting and minimal distractions. They ended up with 32 images, from which the Office of Cultural Affairs then narrowed down to the final 25.
The selected images include such well-known structures as The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, The Mob Museum, and World Market Center, but also oft-overlooked sites such as the Wee Kirk O’The Heather Wedding Chapel, the U.S. Bank branch at Charleston Boulevard and Eighth Street, and the MEET event space.
An opening reception for “In Focus: Downtown Architecture” will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Chamber Gallery, located on the second floor of Las Vegas City Hall, 495 S. Main St.
Normal operating hours for the gallery are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
