Urban Enthusiast – November 2014

11/12/14
Hernan Valencia is an artistic powerhouse from Peru who came to Las Vegas by way of California’s Bay area. Today, he is an art director, illustrator and designer specializing in developing visual strategies and branding for the pop culture, culinary, entertainment and youth orientated industries. From the cover of local entertainment magazines and gig posters for touring rock stars to professional logos and business branding, Valencia’s work covers a broad spectrum.
What made you want to work and live in DTLV?
Like most people, I was drawn to the excitement and energy of making downtown Las Vegas a legitimate local place without tourist interest. The events, venues and possibilities to cross paths with people from all over the world is very exciting. Add to that the short distance and walkability of it all, and you’ve got a place to go every night if you choose.
What drew you to Downtown Spaces specifically?
Downtown Spaces was a complete accident. I had just come off a contract job and was looking for studio space. My friends, Ryan and Jennifer at Square Shooting, posted on social media about their new place inside Downtown Spaces a few months back. It turned out to be a great fit for me, being so close to the center of town. It is great for meetings and working late into the night. There’s also a great sense of community. So many old and new friends work in that building, and I never feel isolated.
What are some of your favorite attractions of the neighborhood?
I must say I do love Velveteen Rabbit. They put a lot of effort into offering themed nights and music. I love taking visitors to Frankie’s Tiki Room, which is also nearby. Food-wise, The Goodwhich, MTO Cafe and O Face Doughnuts are awesome. The brand new Market is very cool.
What do you think sets DTLV apart from other neighborhoods in Las Vegas?
DTLV’s lay out encourages encounters with many people. Having so many art galleries, meet-ups, openings, charity events, theater shows, cabaret shows and live music pretty much every day of the week makes this neighborhood and the surrounding areas a great spot to play and live.
